Few universities in the United States have the recognition and history of the University of Notre Dame. What began as a small Catholic school on the Indiana frontier in the 19th century has grown into one of the world's most respected educational institutions, known for its academic excellence, rich traditions, stunning campus, and legendary athletics.
Where Is Notre Dame?
The University of Notre Dame is located just outside South Bend, Indiana. Its official name is the University of Notre Dame du Lac, which translates from French as "Our Lady of the Lake."
The university's campus covers approximately 1,260 acres and includes two natural lakes that inspired its name. Visitors are often struck by the beauty of the grounds, which feature historic architecture, tree-lined walkways, open green spaces, and some of the most recognisable landmarks in higher education.
Notre Dame is consistently ranked among the most beautiful college campuses in America and attracts visitors from around the world each year.
A Brief History of Notre Dame
Notre Dame was founded in 1842 by Father Edward Sorin, a young French priest who arrived in northern Indiana with a small group from the Congregation of Holy Cross. At the time, the property was little more than undeveloped wilderness, but Father Sorin envisioned a great Catholic university.
The institution faced significant challenges during its early years. One of the most devastating occurred in 1879, when a fire destroyed the Main Building. Rather than abandoning the project, university leaders rebuilt quickly and created an even more impressive structure, including the now-famous Golden Dome.
That spirit of determination has remained a defining characteristic of Notre Dame throughout its history.
Famous Landmarks on Campus
Several campus landmarks have become symbols of the university itself.
The Golden Dome
The Main Building is crowned by a gleaming Golden Dome topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary. It is Notre Dame's most iconic feature and one of the most photographed sights on campus.
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart
Located near the Main Building, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart is known for its impressive Gothic Revival architecture, intricate stained-glass windows, and remarkable artwork. It remains an important centre of worship and university life.
"Touchdown Jesus"
The mural officially known as The Word of Life adorns the side of the Hesburgh Library. Because it overlooks the football stadium and depicts Christ with raised arms, generations of students and fans have nicknamed it "Touchdown Jesus."
The Grotto
Another beloved campus location is the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. Visitors and members of the Notre Dame community often stop there to light candles, reflect, or pray.
The Fighting Irish Tradition
Notre Dame's athletic teams compete under the Fighting Irish name, one of the most distinctive nicknames in college sports. The university's mascot, the Fighting Irish Leprechaun, has represented the school since the 1960s, while the official school colours are navy blue and gold.
Football occupies a special place in Notre Dame history. Unlike most major programmes, Notre Dame competes as an independent rather than belonging to a single athletic conference. Over the decades, the team has won numerous national championships and produced many of the sport's most celebrated players and coaches.
On autumn Saturdays, Notre Dame Stadium becomes the centre of campus life as fans gather to support the Irish and enjoy traditions that have been passed down for generations.
Is Notre Dame a Good University?
Notre Dame is widely regarded as one of the leading universities in the United States.
As a Catholic research university, it combines strong academic programmes with a commitment to faith, service, and community. The university regularly appears among the nation's top-ranked institutions and offers approximately 75 undergraduate majors along with a wide range of graduate and professional programmes.
Notre Dame enrols roughly 8,900 undergraduate students and more than 4,000 graduate and professional students. It is also known for its residential campus experience, with a large majority of students living on campus and participating in the university's close-knit community.
From its academic reputation to its traditions and campus culture, Notre Dame continues to attract students from across the United States and around the world.

Our Approach to Design
Expressionize creates original designs inspired by the spirit and identity of colleges and universities.
To be clear, our garments are not official licensed merchandise. Our artwork is independently created and is specifically designed to avoid reproducing or infringing upon official trademarks. The result is a unique collection of apparel that celebrates school pride while maintaining its own distinctive style.
Why Print-on-Demand Makes Sense
Every item we sell is produced through a print-on-demand process. Rather than manufacturing large quantities in advance, each garment is printed only after an order is placed.
This approach offers several advantages:
- Less waste – Products are made only when needed, reducing excess inventory.
- More variety – We can offer a wider selection of schools, sizes, and designs than would typically be possible in a traditional retail environment.
- Made for your order – Each garment is produced specifically for the customer who purchased it.
The Benefits of Direct-to-Garment Printing
We use direct-to-garment (DTG) printing technology to produce our apparel.
Unlike older printing methods that create a thick layer sitting on top of the fabric, DTG applies water-based inks directly into the material's fibres. The result is a print that feels softer and allows the garment to remain comfortable and breathable.
DTG printing also provides:
- Excellent detail and colour accuracy
- A softer feel compared with many traditional printing methods
- Strong durability when garments are properly cared for
The goal is simple: great-looking apparel that remains comfortable to wear.
